Several weeks ago, British producer Bentley Jones revealed a Jpop cover album project under EMI Music Japan. Last week, final release details were given about this project that seems to be more ambitious and interesting than most of the numerous cover albums that were released in recent months....
Singer, remixer and producer Bentley Jones first made himself a name thanks to a bunch of popular remixes, including works for Britney Spears, Madonna and Beyonce. He also worked on several Sonic the Hedgehog games soundtracks.
Bentley Jones has apparently been interested in Japanese music for years, especially Hikaru Utada, and he already got attention last year for his cover of Shuuchishin's hit, before announcing he signed a contract with EMI Music Japan to release a Jpop cover album.
This album is finally scheduled for March 25 and entitled TRANS//LATION ~J-POP DANCE COVERS~ . It will include a dozen of Jpop hits, all from female Jpop superstars, including Cocco, Namie Amuro , YUKI, Chihiro Onitsuka, mihimaru GT, SPEED, Mika Nakashima... These covers will have dance arrangement and will be sung mostly in Japanese, with a few English covers. Ayumi Hamasaki is said to have been very enthusiastic about Bentley Jones' work and has personally approved his English translation of her song Depend on you, which appears on the CD.
An excerpt from FINAL NIGHT, english cover of JUJU feat.Spontania's Sunao ni naretara, is available to listen on Bentley Jones' Youtube Channel. If you may need time to get used to hearing a male voice on this famous song, the fact is that the producing quality is very well above average, clearly enough to be curious about the final result.
